イメージや記憶を呼び起こす

目の前に現れたものに対して、用途や目的など一様の理解をされることがファインデザインであるとしたならば、それを超えたイメージや記憶を呼び起こすものができないかと考えていた。ミラノサローネサテリテにて発表した、世界共通の記号（数字）を使った「MEMENTO」は、家具見本市であるサローネにもかかわらず、そういったメッセージを込めた空間作品だった。来場者からは「いいね」「キレイ」といった率直な言葉や反応があった。恒例となっている「デザインリポートアワード」で最優秀を受賞したとき、長い間考えていたことが伝わり、デザイナーとして救われたような想いだった。その後の西麻布ギャラリー ル・ベインでの帰国展では、原型となった数字同士を引っ掛ける「MEMENTO LINK」を加え、さらに推し進めた「MEMENTO」の世界観を示した。日常的な空間設計は合理性を求めていくが、空間の在り方としての「単純化」と、イメージや記憶といった「感情」に訴えること、それらを融合した考えは、このころから我々のデザインフィロソフィとして定着したように思う。表層的なものだけではなく、目に見えない繋がりがどこにあるのか、それらを示すことが最も困難であり、そこに迫ることができれば、究極の存在としてデザインしたことが浮かび上がるように思う。

Evoking images and memories

The concept of “good” product design is often straightforward: it presents a physical solution and clearly communicates its purpose. But what if design could go further—evoking images and memories? Numbers are universal symbols we see everywhere. With MEMENTO, we created a spatial piece where light permeates through the numbers, rather than a specific product. As random combinations of numbers cast intricate light patterns across the surrounding surfaces, they conjure the codes of memories. When we presented this “installation” at Milano SaloneSatellite, MEMENTO received an overwhelmingly positive response from visitors. When it won the annual Grand Prize at the Milano SaloneSatellite Design Report Award, we felt relieved and fulfilled—it was the realization of ideas we had been refining for years. Upon returning to Japan, we held an exhibition at GALLERY le bain in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo. For the event, we introduced MEMENTO LINK, a prototype in which numbers are interconnected, appearing to tumble weightlessly through the air. This design expanded on the philosophy we developed with MEMENTO: exploring simplification as a way to define space and using imagery and memory to evoke emotional resonance. One of the greatest challenges in design is uncovering and expressing the invisible connections between ideas, rather than just focusing on superficial elements. When these deeper connections are revealed, a design naturally emerges as a cohesive and ultimate expression.
