Imperfect Natural Forms

The title “untitled” is often given to artworks when the artist wants to leave the interpretation of the work to the viewer’s imagination. What would it mean, then, to apply the concept of “untitled” as a design theme for a museum? Exploring this question led to two contrasting keywords: “algorithm” and “heuristic.” An algorithm is a systematic procedure or method of reasoning designed to solve problems and arrive at definitive conclusions. It is a logical, methodical approach where following the process guarantees a specific outcome. In contrast, heuristic represent a more intuitive way of thinking that doesn’t always produce the “correct” answer, but leads to the desired result. In architectural terms, an “algorithm” could represent the meticulously organized spatial design and structural order, down to the alignment of every joint. On the other hand, a “heuristic” approach might manifest in design elements like the randomly arranged wall tiles. Some feature chamfered edges to break the uniformity of the flat wall and introduce subtle tactile variations. Symbolic of these two contradictory keywords is the object called FOAM. Here, a foam of bubbles represents a structure without rigid order—its individual shapes and boundaries constantly shifting, deforming, and disappearing. It is an irregular, ever-changing balance between order and chaos. According to the law of entropy, “Ordered systems inevitably move toward disorder.” Through FOAM, we seek to explore balance and imbalance within imperfection, as well as the natural form in the abstract space.
